Disciplinary Cognates

Political Science

Political Science investigates power relations, particularly those associated with the organization and conduct of government. Issues of power, authority, decision, strategy, and policy are the concerns of politics, and nearly every aspect of ordinary social life has political components. But political science also involves the empirical study of the public management of power. For example, because the complexities of modern legislation and the increasing activity of special interest groups have led to refinements of decision-making analysis and to the computer simulation of political situations, political scientists have had to develop many new techniques of analysis. Scholars typically pursue one or more of the major subdivisions of this discipline: political institutions and processes, comparative politics, political socialization, public policy, judicial process, international relations, or political philosophy.
