University Requirements

IDS students are responsible for meeting the requirements of Michigan State University . Information about these requirements may be found in Academic Programs , Description of Courses , Schedule of Courses, and the IDS Handbook.

Students are urged to meet with their advisors regularly and frequently to make sure that their programs of study will fulfill graduation requirements. Each student is individually responsible for being aware of and for meeting graduation requirements.

The university requires that all undergraduate students complete 28 credits in a core curriculum, which includes course work in American Thought and Language and courses in Integrative Studies in biological science, physical science, arts and humanities, and social science. Outlines of these requirements may be found on pages 8 and 9 of the IDS Handbook. The university also requires that students demonstrate university-level competence in mathematics and that they include a Tier II Writing course in their majors.

The university mathematics requirement applies to all students who entered MSU as freshmen Fall semester, 1993 and thereafter. It does not apply to students who transferred to MSU from other institutions through Summer semester, 1995. Beginning Fall semester, 1995, all students entering MSU, including all transfer students, are held to this requirement. For more information about how you may fulfill this requirement, please see your IDS advisor.
